Al Fayed abuse ‘could be on scale of Savile’, says survivors’ advocate

There has been a torrent of allegations against the late billionaire businessman since a BBC documentary in September broadcast the claims of 20 women.

Speaking about her appointment earlier this month, Dame Jasvinder Sanghera said she had been contacted by a former pupil from a school for deaf children.

Al Fayed “had access to vulnerable young women from that school”, she said, adding that testimony she had heard suggested that Al Fayed’s “tentacles went far and wide”.

The school told the BBC that as far as it was aware Al Fayed did not have access to the school, and that it takes safeguarding very seriously.



The scale of Mohamed Al Fayed’s sexual abuse could be similar to that of Jimmy Savile’s, Harrods’ newly appointed survivors’ advocate has told the BBC.

“We could be talking about something on the scale of Jimmy Savile,” Dame Jasvinder told BBC Radio 4’s World at One programme.

“What we do know is that there are many people - and survivors have said this to me already - that were complicit [in Al Fayed’s abuse].

“They looked the other way. This could not have happened without people knowing about it, and he used his position of power and influence.”

Savile was one of Britain’s most notorious and prolific sex offenders. He was a TV presenter and DJ who, until his death in 2011, used his prominent status to rape and sexually assault hundreds of people.

In 2012, the Metropolitan Police said they believed there were 450 victims of Savile's abuse. He often used philanthropic work as a cover for his crimes.

Dame Jasvinder added that there are currently about 290 women engaged in Harrods’ compensation process for former employees who say they had been abused by Al Fayed, and that she had written a personal letter to each of them.

Separately, more than 70 women have contacted the BBC since the documentary was broadcast, with accounts of abuse by Al Fayed, including sexual harassment, sexual assault and rape.

But Dame Jasvinder believes there are others who have not yet come forward.


She added that she is keen to speak to all victims of Al Fayed’s abuse, even if they didn’t work at Harrods.

Al Fayed is alleged to have also abused women at other businesses he owned, including the Ritz Paris hotel and Fulham FC.

She said: “If you look at the breadth of the abuse, this didn’t just happen in Harrods. I’m already hearing from survivors who are saying this happened in other areas.”

The Harrods compensation scheme is only open to people who worked for the company.

But Dame Jasvinder said she “would never turn anybody away that was in need of support – even if they need to access me to talk that through, for me to be able to identify the appropriate level of support or process for them.

“I would absolutely encourage anyone affected by this, or who may know somebody that’s affected, who just wants to have a conversation about the process, to absolutely contact me.”

Dame Jasvinder is a prominent human rights campaigner and the founder of the charity Karma Nirvana, which helps victims of honour-based abuse.

She has previously spoken about her parents attempting to force her to marry when she was a teenager, her escape, and being disowned as a result.

Dame Jasvinder was also a survivor advocate on the Church of England’s Independent Safeguarding Board until the panel was sacked in June 2023, when the Church said relations between board members and bishops had "broken down".


Harrods launched an internal review last year to see whether anyone involved in any allegations is still working there. As yet they have declined to say whether any action has been taken against any individual, or when the review might be completed.

Hundreds of women are also working with separate legal firms in claims against the retailer.

At a press conference last month, Justice for Harrods Survivors, which represents some of the accusers, said more than 400 alleged victims and witnesses had been in contact with them.

Most of the 421 prospective claims were connected to Harrods, but others related to incidents at other businesses owned by Al Fayed, the group said.

The survivors included people from the UK, US, Canada, Europe, Australia and Asia, the lawyers added.

Al Fayed: Predator at Harrods, which aired in September, heard testimony from more than 20 female ex-employees at Harrods.

The documentary and podcast found that during Al Fayed's ownership, Harrods not only failed to intervene but helped cover up abuse allegations.

Responding to the investigation, Harrods' current owners said they were “utterly appalled” by the allegations and that his victims had been failed - for which the store sincerely apologised.

43 monkeys escaped in South Carolina. -When a captive animal becomes free

 When a captive animal becomes free



For many people, the idea of a lost animal becoming the property of another person might seem absurd. Certainly, no one would imagine forfeiting the companionship of a beloved dog or cat because the animal got out of the yard and was found by someone else. Neither law nor morality treats the escape of a domesticated animal as tantamount to a forfeiture of all claims to the animal.

Last week, 43 monkeys, all of them young female rhesus macaques, escaped from the Alpha Genesis research laboratory in Yemassee, South Carolina, when an employee failed to properly secure the door to their enclosure.

It wasn’t the first time something like this happened at Alpha Genesis, a company that breeds and uses thousands of monkeys for biomedical testing and supplies nonhuman primate products and bio-research services to researchers worldwide. In 2018, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) fined the facility $12,600 in part for other incidents in which monkeys had escaped. “We’re not strangers to seeing monkeys randomly,” a nearby resident and member of the Yemassee town council told the New York Times.

Alpha Genesis is now working to recapture the macaques, who are each about the size of a cat; over the weekend, 25 of them were recovered. Meanwhile, the animal protection group Stop Animal Exploitation Now, which for years has filed federal complaints against the facility, has called on the USDA to prosecute Alpha Genesis as a repeat violator of its duty to keep the animals secure.

“The recovery process is slow, but the team is committed to taking as much time as necessary to safely recover all remaining animals,” a Facebook post from the Yemassee Police Department said, attributing the comment to Alpha Genesis CEO Greg Westergaard.

In one way, this is a story about what looks like a corporate failure. But there is another way to understand this situation, both legally and morally. What if these intrepid macaques, who the lab has said pose no threat to the public and carry no infectious diseases, have a legal claim to freedom?

The legal status of wild animals is more contested and malleable than ever, evident in the recent court case arguing that Happy, an elephant living at the Bronx Zoo, was a legal person entitled to freedom, the phasing out of animal use at entertainment venues like circuses, and the end of US lab experimentation on chimpanzees. While Alpha Genesis may have a strong financial incentive to recapture the escaped monkeys, longstanding legal doctrines suggest that the 18 monkeys still at large may not belong to the company as long as they remain free and outside of its custody.


State officials, or perhaps even members of the public, might even be legally protected in rescuing these monkeys from a fate of cage confinement and invasive experimentation and bringing them to a sanctuary. Such an outcome would matter not just for these monkeys but also for the rights of captive animals more broadly.

Originally relocated from Puerto Rico between 1979 and 1980, the Morgan Island macaques now serve as a kind of reservoir of lab monkeys for the US government. Last year, Alpha Genesis won a federal contract to oversee the monkey colony there — in fact, the 43 escaped macaques had originally lived as “free-range” monkeys on the island before they were taken to be used for testing and research purposes, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told CBS News in a statement. While these monkeys may not be able to rejoin the Morgan Island colony on their own, the fact that they came from a wild population strengthens the view of them as animals who not only can live in the wild but who deserve to be free.

But when it comes to wild animals, the law is different.

When a captive wild animal escapes, their captor generally remains liable for any damage the escaped animal creates to persons or property, but they may lose ownership of the animal, especially if the creature integrates into an existing wild population (sometimes called “reverting to the common stock”). That might sound unlikely for rhesus macaques in the US — the species is native to South and Southeast Asia and has been exported around the world for lab testing. But it turns out that it’s perfectly possible to live as a free-roaming rhesus macaque in South Carolina, where a more than four-decade-old population of the monkeys resides on the state’s Morgan Island, also known as “Monkey Island.”

These are 10 tips to help uplift your mental wellbeing.

I was asked to pen these tips by Penrith City Council which is showcasing my book Balance during the Penrith City Council Library’s Wellbeing Festival in October for Mental Health Month. Try one of these 10 research-backed tips. These are 10 tips to help uplift your mental wellbeing. 

  1. Exercise (in a way that you enjoy it) to boost your mood. Better still, do it in the morning to help you build confidence and overcome obstacles, says Psychologist Adam Grant. He says that “on days when people exercise before work, they’re more engaged and less exhausted. They see tasks as challenges to conquer rather than threats to avoid.   2. Eat more real foods always(and less stuff from packets). Good food helps to fuel how you think, feel and perform. p.s. some hero foods that boost brain power include things like blueberries, walnuts, salmon, cacao, fermented foods, avocados, and eggs – just to name some!
  3. Find flow. I mention in my book Balance that Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi describes flow as “the secret to a life worth living”. Flow brings you happiness – and you feel this way through doing activities that you love that can put you into a state of flow. To find out more about flow read this in my book or find a Ted Talk from the psychologist himself.
  4. Connect with people you love to relate. A Harvard University study reveals you can live longer and happier if you have quality, loving relationships. This does not have to be a marriage. It can be anyone who loves you and lifts you up, supports you and cares about you.
  5. Go for a walk to calm anxiety. Australian author Sarah Wilson who penned the book ‘First, We Make the Beast Beautiful’, shares in my book Balance why walking is so calming, saying “there are studies to show that walking goes at the same pace as discerning thought, too. That in itself can modulate anxiety”. She explains why this is so in my book, plus shares her passion for sustainability also (page 252).
  6. Learn mindfulness meditation. This is an effective stress-relief technique. It helps to calm your nervous system. There are lots of amazing books on this topic in your local library. I love to teach this and you can access a free senses meditation via my instagram. Click HERE.
  7. Sleep well daily. Dr Adam Storey in my book Balance explains how this increases your ability to manage stress, helps you to have sharper concentration, improves your memory and increases your energy. I’d add that it helps to make me a nicer human to be around if I’ve had 7.5-8 hours a night! chuckle. I also love Dr Storey’s line “sleep like a baby so you can perform like a beast”.
  8. Professor Jarrod Haar recommended getting a pet because this increases happiness. In my book Balance he explains “the pause when we stroke a pet or engage for a few seconds helps employees disconnect from their work, so even after 10 seconds they are better able to refocus on the task at hand. Relaxed and happy workers tend to perform better too”.
  9. Texas-based Happiness researcher Shawn Achor shares in my book Balance that “raising your positivity in the present” can be a key to living life happier. He shares other tips too that he uses daily to help ward off depression. He has courageously spoken publicly about overcoming depression. His insights that he shares are things he works on daily to boost his happiness levels. They’re so simple – yet profoundly powerful.
  10. Spread kindness. It’s a boomerang. If you are kind to others, then I promise this vibe will come back to you too. And of course, this will help you to smile.

Human remains found under sheltered housing patio

 Human remains have been found under the patio of a sheltered housing site.



Hertfordshire Police was called to St Mary's House, Hemel Hempstead, on Thursday after the remains were discovered by builders digging up the patio.

The force said officers were making inquiries as to why the remains, which they said were "very old", were at the site.

The Abbeyfield Society, which runs the sheltered housing site, wrote in a letter to residents that the remains were "estimated to have been there many, many years".


It added that building work had been paused while it waited for forensic teams to visit the site.

The house was built in the 18th Century but the building and attached stables were later converted into flats and bungalows.

It is now a sheltered housing site, with a mixture of rooms, flats and bungalows, for people over the age of 55.
