The former presidential candidate for African Action Congress in the 2023 general elections, led this out in a post shared via his X page on Thursday.

Sowore also recalled how numerous bye-elections were held due to the deaths of some political office holders.

The post reads: “Today, I participated in a consultative meeting between @inecnigeria Nigeria and political parties in Abuja, where an unexpected issue emerged concerning the numerous bye-elections held this year due to the deaths of over 12 political office holders across Nigeria.

“Interestingly, I was seated close to the @APCNigeria Chairman, Gandollar, and their party secretary, ex-Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, @DrSRJ_ (a former ‘comrade’ of ours at UNILAG/NANS.)

‘Their responses were quite revealing, as they appeared amused by this correlation.

“In fact, @DrSRJ_ was screaming from his seat, Sowore you’ve come again! They don’t still get it! #RevolutionNow.”

US Begins Massive Deportation Operation, Arrests Over 500

In a swift and decisive move, United States authorities have arrested 538 undocumented migrants and deported hundreds more in a large-scale operation, just days into President Donald Trump’s second tenure.

This action is part of Trump’s promised crackdown on illegal immigration, which was a central theme of his election campaign.

According to White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt’s X post on Friday, “The Trump Administration arrested 538 illegal immigrant criminals.

“The largest massive deportation operation in history is well underway. Promises made. Promises kept.”

The deportation operation involved military aircraft and was carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

However, the operation has raised concerns, with Newark city mayor, Ras J. Baraka stating that ICE agents “raided a local establishment, detaining undocumented residents as well as citizens, without producing a warrant.”

The US Congress has also approved a bill to expand pretrial incarceration for foreign criminal suspects, further solidifying Trump’s tough stance on immigration.

This development comes as Trump has signed executive orders declaring a “national emergency” at the southern border and deploying more troops to the area.

The administration has vowed to deport “criminal aliens” and overhaul the US entry system.

Gov Oyebanji Kicks Against Sharia Court Establishment In Ekiti

Ekiti State Governor, Abiodun Abayomi Oyebanji’s led government has kicked against purported establishment of Sharia Court in the state.

This was contained in a statement by the sate’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dayo Apata on Thursday.

INFORMATION NIGERIA reports that the development is coming, following some reports about the first public sitting of Ekiti State Shariah Panel.

Reacting to the development, Mr. Apata, noted that laws in Ekiti do not recognise Sharia court, stressing that the existing judicial structure is adequate to address all kinds of disputes.

The statement partly reads: “There is an existing legal structure in Ekiti State (i.e. Customary Court, Customary Court of Appeal and High Court) that has been handling issues relating to Islamic, Christian and traditional marriages and inheritance without any rancour or agitation.

“The government will not compromise on any action that may hinder the prevailing peace and fester hostility in the state.

“The Sharia Courts in the North are equivalent to the Customary Courts in the southern part of Nigeria.

“Wherein appeals from Sharia Courts in the North go to the Shariah Court of Appeal, the state similarly has the Customary Court of Appeal that hears appeals from the Customary Courts.

“The Customary Courts and the Customary Court of Appeal can effectively take care of any customary issues arising from Yoruba traditional marriages, Islamic marriages and Christian marriages, especially the ones that were not backed-up by the statutory marriages which can only be dissolved by the states High Courts throughout Nigeria.

“Be wary of being used as tools by politicians and fifth columnists because the government will not hesitate to invoke the full weight of the law to protect the constitution of the federation and maintain peaceful co-existence in the state.”

Ganduje Urges Gov Bago To Take Offensive Against Bandits In Niger

Abdullahi Ganduje, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has advocated for a proactive approach in combating banditry and insurgency.

He emphasized the need for the military to take control of forests in the North, rather than adopting a defensive strategy.

Ganduje made this call during on Thursday during a condolence visit to Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, following the tragic tanker explosion incidents at Dikko junction in Suleja.

He commended Bago’s efforts in maintaining security in the state, noting that Niger State has the largest land mass and highest number of forests in Nigeria.

“Your Excellency, the solution to this menace is to conquer the forest. The bandits are in the forest, why have we been on the defensive instead of being on the offensive?,” he queried, as revealed in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu.

He cited his experience as Governor of Kano State, where he requested military intervention to take over Falgore Forest, resulting in the displacement of bandits and restored peace in the area.

“When I was the Governor of Kano State, I requested through the Federal Government that the military takes over Falgore Forest and the military built a military training ground there. That was how bandits were chased away from that forest and Kano is at peace,” he said

Abuja: Man Sentenced To Two Years In Prison For Cutting Off Woman’s Finger

Man Sentenced To Two Years In Prison For Cutting Off Woman's Finger
A dramatic turn of events has led to the sentencing of Mas’ud Yusuf to two years’ imprisonment without the option of a fine.

Yusuf was found guilty of cutting off his female friend’s finger and injuring another after seeing her with one of his friends, as stated by Daily Trust.

According to the prosecuting counsel, J. N. Atinko, the incident occurred on January 11, when the victim, Fatima Muhammad Lawal, reported the crime at the “A” police division in Dei-Dei.

Lawal alleged that Yusuf attacked her with a cutlass, severing one of her fingers and injuring another when she attempted to protect her neck.

Yusuf admitted to committing the crime, citing anger as his motivation.

He begged the court for leniency, but Chief Magistrate Linda J. C of the Abuja magistrates’ court sitting in Jiwa, ultimately handed down the two-year sentence.

“Darlington Will Never Beg Burna Boy” – Lawyer Insists After Singer’s Release From Detention

Stanley Alieke, the lawyer representing Nigerian rapper Speed Darlington, has revealed what his client will not do in the ongoing defamation case against fellow artist Burna Boy.

Information Nigeria previously reported that Speed Darlington was arrested and held by the police after claiming that Burna Boy was allegedly involved in an improper relationship with the troubled American rapper and music executive, Diddy.

The trial of the singer, who was released on Tuesday after being granted bail weeks ago, is set to resume on 18 March at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Speed Darlington’s lawyer revealed in an interview with BBC Pidgin posted on Facebook Thursday that the singer will not try to negotiate with the ‘Last Last’ crooner.

He said: “Speed Darlington will never beg Burna Boy, and as his counsel, we will never support him because of all he has suffered. He won’t even agree if I advise him to beg Burna Boy. I cannot even advise him to do so because the matter is already in court. Whether he begs or not, it is now within the court’s jurisdiction to determine if what Speed Darlington said defamed Burna Boy.

“If he begs, it would mean he has pleaded guilty because Burna Boy’s petition against him claims that what he said damaged his international reputation and caused him to lose endorsements. Why didn’t Burna Boy initiate a civil action in court instead? The court could have equated any damages to financial compensation.”

Mr. Alieke also mentioned that Speed Darlington’s extended detention led to financial losses for him (Speedy) and that his legal team had filed a lawsuit seeking financial compensation to uphold his fundamental human rights.

It is worth noting that Speed Darlington filed a N300 million fundamental rights enforcement suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

However, the case was postponed until January 27th after the IGP’s attorney asked for more time to analyse new evidence.

“No amount they give him can equal the hardship he has suffered. They made him miss December and January shows—about 20 events he was invited to. We will present these issues to the court, as some of the show organisers had already paid him. After his release, people started sending him messages demanding refunds of their money, like N5 million, N2 million, etc.

“These are the issues we will address before even discussing the infringement of his human rights. Even if we increase the claim to N1 billion, Speed Darlington is a person of international standard, and they subjected him to unnecessary suffering,” said Mr Alieke.

He claimed that his client was being held in a facility intended for criminals awaiting trial, despite the police being required to grant him administrative bail at the time of his arrest.

He noted, “Some people were saying that it serves him right because he talks carelessly, but no matter what, that does not mean the police should keep him for that number of days or subject him to such hardship.

“They kept him in an Abattoir at the SARS office in Abuja, where Boko Haram members, Fulani herdsmen, and other criminals awaiting trial are held, just because they wanted to break him.”

Ex-Niger Gov Queries FG Over Border Closure, Laments Poor Education In North

Former governor of Niger State, Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, has questioned Federal Government over its decision on border closure.

Mr. Mu’azu noted that despite the action, goods from Nigeria are smuggled to other West African countries.

Speaking at the 22nd Daily Trust Dialogue themed Food Security: Availability or Affordability in Abuja on Thursday, the former governor urged ministry of livestock to partner with universities of education and agriculture in educating farmers.

He said “What is the importance of closing borders? What is the importance of that while the population of Nigeria is almost the population of other ECOWAS members? And every market you go to in ECOWAS countries you will discover that more than half of the things in that market are from Nigeria.

“For example, in Niger the cow is still cheaper than in Nigeria. Apart from the inflation, it has always been like that because we used to send people there on good days to get these cows either for slaughter or Sallah.

“Why is this so? Please, do what you have to do. Do also the education.

READ MORE: Border Closure Achieved Nothing, FG Should Apologise – Shehu Sani

Mr. Babangida also raised concerns over quality of education in northern part of the country, saying that no state in the region has up to 50 per cent of qualified teachers.

He added: “The second thing I am pursuing is education. In the northern states, no state has 50% qualified teachers. Even those attending the schools now, let alone those who cannot attend school.

“Federal universities should be used in agriculture and education to educate people. We need education to have people who are passionate about a particular thing.”

“We are still in shock on how he could kill his father. Before neighbours were called in to see what happened, he had already buried the head in a shallow grave in the compound. He took people and showed them the grave,” a native of the community, said.

“I’m Back” – Speed Darlington Hints At Stronger Comeback Amid Burna Boy Drama, Jail Ordeal

Nigerian singer Speed Darlington has addressed the public following his release from jail, where he faced accusations of defaming Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy.

It should be recalled that the singer was taken into custody in the final quarter of 2024, re-arrested shortly after, and faced a bail delay of almost two months.

Darlington took to Instagram on Thursday, two days after his release to share a thought-provoking video that attracted his admirers.

“You’re A Transactional Politician, Opportunist” – Gov Bala Slams Wike Over Alleged Anti-Party Behavior

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed has berated Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike over his recent media chat.

INFORMATION NIGERIA reports that Mr. Wike, had faulted Governor Bala for antagonizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

The former governor of Rivers State also criticized Bauchi Governor for opposing tax reform bill, a legislation which has generated controversy across the nation.

Reacting to Wike’s media chat in a statement on Thursday by Governor Bala’s Special Adviser for Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, described the FCT’s Minister as a ‘transactional politician.’

Gidado also said that former governor of Rivers State’s loyalty shifts with his personal ambitions.

He added that Wike’s political career owed much to the opportunities provided by Peoples Democratic Party.

The statement partly reads: “While Wike accuses others of insincerity, he has seamlessly transitioned from being a self-proclaimed PDP stalwart to an ardent supporter of the APC government.

“This chameleonic behaviour raises serious questions about Wike’s credibility and moral compass.

“Nigerians are not deceived by Wike’s antics. They see a man willing to undermine his party for personal gain, a man whose loyalty shifts as quickly as his alliances.

“By contrast, Senator Bala Mohammed’s opposition to the Tax Reform Bills reflects a principled stand aimed at ensuring inclusive governance and accountability.

“His constructive interventions have already led to significant adjustments in the reform process, underscoring the importance of meaningful dialogue over hollow rhetoric.

“Yet, he now gleefully undermines the very foundation that nurtured him. It is disheartening that a man who owes so much to a party that stood by him in his political journey has chosen to be a willing tool in its denigration.

“His recent media outburst was yet another reminder of his transactional approach to politics, where personal ambition eclipses loyalty, principles, and collective interests.”

“By contrast, Senator Bala Mohammed’s opposition to the Tax Reform Bills reflects a principled stand aimed at ensuring inclusive governance and accountability.

“His constructive interventions have already led to significant adjustments in the reform process, underscoring the importance of meaningful dialogue over hollow rhetoric.”

FG Approves N4bn Cash Transfer For Displaced, Vulnerable Households

The Federal Government has disclosed a significant intervention to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Nigeria, approving N4 billion for conditional cash transfers to vulnerable households.

This move aims to support at least “10 million displaced households,” primarily targeting women, especially widows, pregnant women, and those with disabilities.

According to Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Prof Nentawe Yilwada, “We are prioritizing women, especially widows, pregnant women, and those with disabilities. The experiences of displaced women, particularly those facing pregnancy or disability, are especially challenging.

“Furthermore, a N4bn provision has been approved to support vulnerable groups through cash transfers, targeting families affected by natural disasters and other crises.

“We understand these vulnerabilities and will continue to support those who are most in need.”

The cash transfer program, he said, is set to begin in February and continue through April, providing immediate relief to families affected by displacement, particularly in the Northeast.

Additionally, the government has approved N2 billion in interest-free loans to farmers in rural communities to boost food production and self-sufficiency.

The program will provide loans ranging “from N300,000 to N400,000 per household,” helping farmers access necessary resources and linking them to market opportunities.

Yilwada emphasized that “Female-headed households experience higher rates of hunger than male-headed ones, and this is where we will focus much of our efforts. Ensuring access to food, water, healthcare, and safety for these women is one of our top priorities.”

The initiative is part of the government’s “broader strategy to alleviate poverty and provide relief to those in urgent need,” with a focus on addressing the needs of internally displaced persons, returnees, and affected communities across Nigeria.

“At the time our men from Amasiri Unit Command got the information, and got to the scene, the victims had been rescued.

“So my men didn’t directly carry out the rescue exercise, and therefore could not ascertain the true position of what happened. Except that the crash occurred on 22nd January about 14.00 hours. The route was Amasiri-Okigwe, where they call Amenu village in Okposi.

“Two vehicles were involved, one was a Toyota commercial bus, grey color, and the other was a Mercedes-Benz tipper (truck), a commercial Mercedes-Benz tipper, the regular Tipper that you see around.

“So, from preliminary findings, it was allegedly caused by excessive speed on the part of the commercial vehicle, that is the bus.

“But the details as to the number injured and so on have not been ascertained, because like I said, the victims were actually rescued by bystanders and then taken to David Umahi Hospital in Uburu.

“And then the items recovered at the scene, I was told, is in the custody of one Chief Amos, of Amenu village in the same Okposi.

“At the King David’s Hospital, where my men went, the ones they saw were actually in stable condition,” he said.

Foluke Oladeinde, the Ebonyi State Coordinator of NYSC, paid a visit to the injured prospective corps members in the hospital.

“I am not in a right frame of mind to talk now. I am in the hospital now. Yes the accident occurred but I can’t talk right now,” she told journalists on Thursday.

Judge Halts Trump’s ‘Blatantly Unconstitutional’ Birthright Citizenship Order

A United States federal judge has temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at ending birthright citizenship, deeming it “blatantly unconstitutional.”

The order, signed by Trump just hours after taking office, directed government agencies to stop issuing citizenship documentation to babies born in the US to parents without legal status.

Judge John Coughenour’s ruling came after a brief hearing in Seattle, where four states – Arizona, Illinois, Oregon, and Washington – asked the court to immediately block the order.

The Judge, on Thursday, questioned the order’s validity, asking, “Is this order constitutional?” before interrupting the Justice Department lawyer’s response to say, “This is a blatantly unconstitutional order.”

Coughenour’s decision prevents the order from taking effect for now, as he weighs whether to issue a preliminary injunction that would block the order in the longer term.

The order, titled “Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship,” has sparked controversy and lawsuits from immigration advocacy groups and Democratic Attorneys General.

They argue that the order violates the 14th Amendment’s Citizenship Clause, which guarantees birthright citizenship ¹.

Nicholas Brown, the Attorney General of Washington, welcomed the Judge’s decision, saying, “This was fairly obvious. This was simple.”

The nationwide block is seen as a significant setback for the Trump administration’s efforts to restrict birthright citizenship.

The Trump administration is expected to appeal the ruling.

Chaos erupted at the Ekeki Police Division in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Thursday as a violent clash broke out between the Nigeria Police and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

PUNCH Metro learned that some NDLEA operatives were in the area to apprehend a woman suspected of being a drug peddler. They had also made an entry in the police records before proceeding with their operation.

However, as the NDLEA operatives carried out their operation, policemen from the Ekeki Police Division blocked their efforts, leading to a confrontation.

An eyewitness told PUNCH on Thursday that the confrontation led to several shots being fired, triggering panic among residents in the area.

“As I was at the Bayelsa Newspaper Corporation, I heard some shots, about six shots, and I decided to find out. As I got to the Ekeki Police Division, I saw a confrontation between the police and NDLEA operatives,” the eyewitness said.

It was revealed that during the incident, the police fired at two NDLEA vehicles in an attempt to prevent the agency from taking the suspect.

The eyewitness further suggested that it appeared the police were allegedly shielding the drug suspect, allowing her to continue her drug activities near the police division.

“The incident has made people suspect that the police are allegedly providing some kind of support for the woman to do drug business in the area,” he said.

When contacted, the NDLEA spokesman, Mr Howells Oba, said, “Our men went for an operation behind the Ekeki Police Division. Our man made an entry at the police station.”

On the shooting, Oba said, “They shot two of our vehicles and we are trying to see how we can take them out.”

According to him, the agency plans to release a formal statement regarding the situation but emphasized that they were working to resolve the matter and restore order.

When reached for comment, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Musa Mohammed, stated that he was rushing to the scene to investigate the incident.

“I am going there now to find out what happened,” Mohammed stated.

Inflation: 13m More Nigerians Risk Falling Below Poverty Line In 2025 – Report

Rising inflation, high interest rates, and naira depreciation could push an additional 13 million Nigerians below the national poverty line by 2025, according to a new report titled ‘2025 Nigerian Budget and Economic Outlook’ by PricewaterhouseCoopers International Limited (PwC).

The report stated, “Macroeconomic pressure points such as rising inflation, high interest rates, and naira depreciation may drive an additional 13 million people below the national poverty line by 2025.”

PwC further noted, “The number of people living below the national poverty line is projected to increase by about 13 million by 2025,” attributing this rise to the country’s worsening inflation and high cost of living.

The report highlighted these economic headwinds as major contributors to the projected increase in poverty levels.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria’s headline inflation rate stood at 34.80 per cent as of December 2024.

Also, the President of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Chief Francis Meshioye, disclosed that the manufacturing sector faced severe challenges in 2024, driven by macroeconomic issues such as high inflation, soaring interest rates, and the depreciating naira.

On a positive note, however, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is projecting the economy to grow by 4.17 per cent this year, driven by ongoing reforms and stabilising inflation, Governor Olayemi Cardoso said yesterday.

Reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu in 2023, including the removal of the petrol subsidy and two devaluations of the naira, have contributed to rising inflation in Africa’s most populous country.

Cardoso stated at a conference that inflation, currently at 34.8 per cent, is expected to decline as the reforms begin to yield positive results. He also noted that foreign exchange reserves are expected to rise gradually, supported by increased oil production.

Oil output is forecast to reach 2.3 million barrels per day by mid-year, Cardoso revealed. According to him, Nigeria recorded foreign exchange inflows exceeding $6 billion in 2024, pushing foreign exchange reserves to over $40 billion.

Cardoso emphasised that the Central Bank’s priority remains maintaining price stability and strengthening market confidence. To achieve this, the bank plans to improve transparency and efficiency in the foreign exchange market.

“With limited opportunities for FX arbitrage, we anticipate greater interest in real sector development,” he added.

Similarly, Nigeria’s economy is projected to witness a decline in inflation and stabilisation of foreign exchange (FX) rates by 2025 as reforms in key economic sectors and policy adjustments take effect.

Experts shared this projection yesterday in Lagos during the Executive Roundtable on Nigeria’s 2025 Budget and Economic Outlook, organised by PwC and BusinessDay Media.

The event, themed ‘Insights and Strategies for Navigating Nigeria’s Economic, Fiscal and Policy Landscape in 2025’, highlighted the country’s fiscal challenges and opportunities.

The experts noted that government revenue is expected to grow in 2025 due to ongoing reforms. However, achieving the ambitious revenue target of N36.35 trillion will require substantial effort.

The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, emphasised that the high Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) is contributing to inflation rather than reducing it. He explained that businesses are forced to secure financing for working capital at higher costs, thereby driving up prices.

Oyedele expressed optimism about inflation easing in 2025. He observed that while scepticism persists, the average inflation rate for 2024 stood at 33 per cent, and if conditions remain stable, the nominal inflation rate for 2025 is projected to drop to 25 per cent.

He also highlighted external factors that could impact Nigeria’s economy. According to Oyedele, President Donald Trump’s pledge to intensify oil and gas drilling may result in lower global oil prices. While this could alleviate price pressures, it presents a trade-off, as government revenue might decline due to reduced oil prices.

“The Central bank is going to introduce a code for FX by the end of the month which would improve the transparency issue. And once it’s addressed, the pressure on the FX has been taken off significantly.

“About $20 million every day is off the market. Some of the reforms we are doing from the fiscal side, it’s about $4 billion we are taking off the market as well. Nigerian businesses are being asked to pay levies, taxes, and regulatory fees in dollars. It’s about $4 billion. Once we pass our tax bills, that’s off the market. As we’re taking off those pressure from the market, we’re seeing improved liquidity coming in,” he said.

He said the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited is expected to contribute approximately $10 billion to the federation account this year, compared to less than $2 billion remitted last year.

He stressed the need for the industry to shift its focus from merely stabilising the naira exchange rate to fostering its recovery.

Oyedele expressed his belief that the current exchange rate does not reflect the naira’s true value, asserting that an exchange rate of N1,500 per dollar is not a fair valuation, as the naira remains undervalued.

The Chief Executive Officer of First Bank of Nigeria, Olusegun Alebiosu, highlighted the likelihood of a drop in food inflation within the year, attributing it to increased investments in agriculture expected in 2025.

Partner and Lead at PwC Strategy & Practice, West Market Area, Olusegun Zaccheaus, stated that factors such as improved revenue generation, debt sustainability, broad policy interventions, monetary policy alignment, fiscal strategy highlights, and addressing key issues for macroeconomic stability will shape Nigeria’s economy in 2025.

He noted that FX stability, price stability, and interest rates are critical monetary issues for 2025. According to him, easing volatility will depend on price discovery, transparency, market friction, liquidity, supply-demand backlogs, and market and investor confidence.

“Inflation may ease as supply-driven inflationary pressures subside and monetary policy tightening is sustained. However, the Nigerian government’s planned expenditure increase to N47.9 trillion in 2025, coupled with the introduction of a new minimum wage, is expected to drive inflation. As a result, the CBN is likely to maintain a tight monetary policy to manage these inflationary pressures,” he explained.

He further highlighted that the planned increase in telecom tariffs and rising electricity prices are expected to contribute to sector-specific inflation.

While improved price stability in petroleum products (PMS) could help mitigate some inflationary pressures, the overall impact on sectors such as telecommunications and energy may still result in higher consumer costs.

“Manufacture In America Or Face Tariffs” – Trump To Global Businesses

United States President, Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to global businesses, urging them to manufacture their products in the United States or face tariffs.

This warning was delivered during his first major speech to global leaders since returning to the White House, where he addressed the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, via remote video conferencing on Thursday.

Trump’s message was clear: “Come make your product in America and we will give you among the lowest taxes of any nation on earth.”

However, he also made it clear that failure to comply would result in tariffs: “But if you don’t make your product in America, which is your prerogative, then very simply you will have to pay a tariff.”

The US President also expressed his belief that lower oil prices could help bring an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

To achieve this, he plans to ask Saudi Arabia and OPEC to reduce oil prices.

“If the price came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately,” he said, adding that “Right now, the price is high enough that that war will continue.”

Trump’s speech comes amid reports that the US may impose steep tariffs on major trading partners Canada, Mexico, and China as early as February 1.

The US President has also signed several executive orders, including ones that pull the United States out of the Paris Climate Accords and the World Health Organisation.

Ajaero Faults Power Minister Over Electricity Bands, Migration Plans

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, has claimed that the electricity bands and migration plan is discriminatory.

Speaking on Channels TV’s program on Thursday, Ajaero berated Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, for putting some Nigerians in Band A and others in lower bands.

The NLC President also kicked against service-based tariff which put electricity users in different bands, according to service delivered by distribution companies, calling it the highest form of ‘419’.

He said: “Now the ministry is talking about migrating from Band B To Band A, that is the highest level of 419 one can think of,” Ajaero said on the programme.

“The local parlance 419 has become notorious for the description of fraudulent activities.

“Who is in Band A and who is in Band B? Is it based on geographical area that you have Band A or Band B or is it based on the dictates of the provider?

“In countries of the world that are targeting 24 hours power supply, why would somebody be talking about Band A or Band B? How would it happen?

“So, that idea is concocted to make money unnecessarily and say people are migrated.

“What are the conditions to be on Band A? What are the conditions to be on Band Be? Why would you discriminate?

“Why would you give me Band B and give somebody Band A? So, these are the issues.”

INFORMATION NIGERIA reports that the development is coming, following Adelabu’s statement that 90 per cent of electricity users in Band A have confirmed that they are getting the benefit of being in Band A.

He also said that more customers would be migrated to Band A to enjoy electricity for longer hours.

Power Minister Clarifies N8bn Budget Amidst Controversy

Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power, has on Thursday set the record straight on the N8 billion budgeted for the power sector in 2025.

Contrary to reports that the funds would be used for electricity bill sensitization, Adelabu explained that the allocation is specifically meant for advocacy, education, and enlightenment on power assets vandalization and protection.

According to Adelabu, the budget will be used to sensitize Nigerians on the need to “protect power infrastructure,” which has been plagued by vandalism and “sabotage.”

“Far from what is being canvassed, the federal government is deeply worried about acts of sabotage that have continued to erode the gains made in the last one and half year in electricity supply to Nigerians,” he said in a statement by Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser to the Minister on Strategic Communications and Media Relations.

The Minister emphasized that the advocacy program would be nationwide, covering all 774 local government areas and 36 states, including Abuja.

The program would utilize various platforms, including “radio, television, social media, newspapers, and billboards, to re-orientate Nigerians on the implications of vandalizing power infrastructure.”

Adelabu also noted that the program would involve engaging community stakeholders, local security personnel, and deploying technology to safeguard power assets.

“This would also involve the engagements of the different community stakeholders across the geo-political zones in town hall meetings; engaging local security men to protect such assets,” he explained.

The Minister’s clarification comes amid reports that the ministry had budgeted N8 billion for sensitization on electricity payment.

However, Adelabu maintained that the Ministry does not need to preach to Nigerians about paying for electricity they consume, as the various distribution companies (DisCos) are capable of recovering debts owed to them.

‘Ensure My Case Is Transferred To Southeast If No Other Abuja FHC Judge Apart From Justice Nyako Wants To Priside Over It’ – Nnamdi Kanu Tells Counsel

Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has requested that his case to be transferred to South-East if no judge at the Federal High Court in Abuja is willing to preside over it apart from Justice Binta Nyako.

This was contained in a statement on Wednesday by his lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, following a routine meeting with his legal team at the Department of State Services facility in Abuja.

The IPOB leader ordered his lawyers to ensure that Justice Nyako stays off his case following her recusal.

Recall that Kanu had asked the trial Judge to ‘hands off’ his trial on grounds of lack of confidence.

Following the call, Justice Nyako stepped down from Kanu’s case and transferred the case file to Chief Justice of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho.

In his statement, Ejimakor disclosed that the IPOB leader had instructed his legal team to prevent Justice Nyako from presiding over his trial.

He said: “The routine visitation to Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu continues unabated, as the legal team just concluded a crucial visitation today.

“The central issue arising at today’s visitation is the upcoming court date for the continuation of MNK’s case.

“Due to its constitutional implications, Onyendu instructed the legal team to take certain prompt steps to ensure that his case is not handled by the same Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako, who had withdrawn from the case by virtue of the order of recusal entered on 24th September 2024.

“The point was stressed that should the case still lie with Justice Murtala-Nyako, it would mean that the same court is disobeying an order that it made.

“If no other judge in Abuja is willing to handle the case, the Chief Judge is free to transfer the case to Umuahia, Awka, Enugu, Asaba, Port Harcourt, or any other Federal High Court within the former Eastern Nigeria, where the alleged offenses were said to have occurred or had their impact.”

He also stated that he had evidence to back up his claims and had decided not to speak out about the incident until now.

The Mpu community in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State, on Wednesday, celebrated the return of Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu.

Recall that Mrs. Beatrice, her husband, Ike, and a medical doctor, Obinna Obeta, were jailed in the United Kingdom by a judge at The Central Criminal Court, over alleged organ harvesting.

While Beatrice was jailed for four years and six months in March 2023, Ike, who was also found guilty of the same offence, was bagged nine years and eight month imprisonment.

PDP Crisis: ‘Damagum Will Remain Till 2025’ – NWC Elected Deputies Insist

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) elected deputies have weighed in on the Party’s current crisis, stating that all members are responsible for the situation.

According to the deputies, led by Comrade Timothy Osadolor, the Party’s Deputy National Youth Leader, no single individual can be blamed for the crisis.

Osadolor emphasized that the Party must move beyond the blame game and work towards restoring its fortunes.

He also challenged Party members to stop using court orders and media interviews to distract the Party, instead urging them to join hands with the chairUmar Damagum to move the PDP forward.

On the leadership crisis surrounding the National Secretary position, Osadolor stated that the party would wait for the court’s decision.

He noted, “From 2013 to date, personal ambitions have driven us to heights of pure mischief and arrogant use of power.

“We are all complicit by being perpetrators, supporters, or silent. No one is coming to save us; we must stand up and become heroes; we brought ourselves here.

“This is no longer the time for a blame game; all have sinned. From the BOT chairman, who endorsed an opposition governor, to candidates that negotiated and supported other party candidates in promises to get their return support, to NWC members and leaders that lost their polling units.

“We must all come down from our high horses, forget pride for now, and join hands with the party as led by Amb. Illya Damagum to reposition this party back to winning ways.”

The deputies declared their support for Damagum, stating that he would remain in office as the PDP Chairman until December 2025.

Osadolor added, “The case of the acting national chairman is settled till December 2025, and on that of the National Secretary, we wait on the courts. Let’s learn to love and support PDP first and always.”

The PDP is also dealing with external challenges, including what Osadolor described as the “tyranny” of the All Progressives Congress-led federal government against the Party and Nigerians in general.

SERAP Gives Tinubu 48-Hour Ultimatum To Reverse 50% Telecom Tariff Hike

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has issued a stern warning to President Bola Tinubu, demanding that he reverses the recent 50% increase in telecom tariffs within 48 hours.

Failure to comply will result in legal action, SERAP threatened.

According SERAP’s statement on Wednesday, “The Tinubu administration and telcos must immediately reverse the unlawful increase in calls and data costs. We’ll see in court if the 50% tariff hike is not reversed within 48 hours.”

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had approved the tariff hike on January 20, citing the need to address the gap between operational costs and current tariffs.

The NCC stated that “the adjustment, capped at a maximum of 50 per cent of current tariffs, though lower than the over 100 per cent requested by some network operators, was arrived at taking into account ongoing industry reforms that will positively influence sustainability.”

The NCC also noted that “tariff rates have remained static since 2013, despite the increasing costs of operation faced by telecom operators.” The commission believes that the approved adjustment will support telecom operators in investing in infrastructure and innovation, ultimately benefiting consumers through improved services and connectivity.

As disclosed by the NCC, “these adjustments will support the ability of operators to continue investing in infrastructure and innovation, ultimately benefiting consumers through improved services and connectivity, including better network quality, enhanced customer service, and greater coverage.”

Nevertheless, the increase has sparked concerns about the potential consequences of the tariff hike on the already struggling Nigerian economy.

ISWAP: South West Governors Accused Of Inaction As Insecurity Looms

South West Governors
The Aareonakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has criticized South West Governors for failing to collaborate with security groups to address the growing insecurity in the region.

Adams, who leads the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) and other security stakeholders, expressed frustration over the Governors’ lack of response to their requests for partnership.

According to the OPC and other security groups, including the Hunters Association, they have offered to work with the Governors to tackle insecurity, but their efforts have been met with silence.

“We have written to the governors, but they have not responded.

“Yoruba land will be too hot for terrorists and members of the ISWAP. We are ready to do the job and we are not going to relent until there is peace in our region,” Adams said in a chat with Vanguard on Wednesday.

Alao Olusola, Deputy Coordinator of OPC in Ogun State, noted, “OPC wrote letters to traditional rulers in the region on the same subject matter, but none of them responded to the letter.

“We have partnered with the police in our areas to fight insecurity, but we need the governors’ approval to take more decisive action.”

South West Media Officer, Nigeria Forest Security Service, NFSS, formerly known as Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Services, NHFSS, Bayo Adediran, said: “Some governors including Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Ademola Adeleke of Osun State and Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State have been assisting our group via provision of operational vehicles, motorcycles and adequate recognition.

“We hope that our governors in the region would collaborate with us to tackle insecurity in the region. They cannot tackle this menace alone. We are closer to the grassroots.”

Coordinator of OPC in Osun State, Adeyemi Aboderin, disclosed: “We have received a standby order from the Aare Ona Kakanfo, Iba Gan Adams to be vigilant and collaborate with the state government to ensure proper security of forest and border towns in the region.

“However, here in Osun State, we are still waiting for the State Government to reach out to us on areas of collaboration to ensure the safety of lives and property in the State.”

APC, LP, NNPP Oppose Falana’s Proposal For Defected, Dead Lawmakers To Be Replaced Without Bye-Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has received backing from major political parties, including the Labour Party (LP) and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), to continue conducting bye-elections.

This support comes despite INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu’s concerns about the financial burden of frequent bye-elections.

Yakubu, on Wednesday, during a consultative meeting with political party leaders in Abuja emphasized the need for legislative reforms, citing more efficient systems in other countries that fill vacancies without resorting to frequent elections.

He stated, “Over the last one and a half years… vacancies have occurred in 23 constituencies.

“While the commission has conducted nine bye-elections early last year, 14 more vacancies have occurred since then.

“They are unpredictable, unbudgeted and difficult to plan in advance. Worse, some bye-elections lead to more bye-elections.

“Consequently, one bye-election led to three bye-elections. Not only are these bye-elections costly, they also divert the commission’s attention from its other extensive electoral responsibilities.”

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, in his reaction,, proposed that political parties should internally decide who replaces an elected officer who resigns or dies in office.

However, Obiora Ifoh, LP’s National Publicity Secretary, speaking with Punch argued, “In most democracies, bye-elections are conducted to fill vacancies.

READ ALSO: “Elections Are Won By Parties, Not Candidates” – Femi Falana Calls For End To Unnecessary By-Election Expenditure

“INEC doesn’t need to spend heavily on bye-elections since essential materials are already available.”

National Publicity Secretary of the NNPP, Ladipo Johnson, disagreed with Falana’s proposition, saying, “I don’t think it is proper for parties to fill vacant positions. It is something that must be looked at critically. What is the difference between bye-elections and regular elections that parties will have to decide?”

All Progressives Congress’ National Publicity Director, Bala Ibrahim, called for wider consultations on the way forward and suggested exploring alternatives to minimize the cost of rerun elections.

He said, “Under democracy, things should be done according to the wishes of the majority. This issue should be thrown for wider deliberation and debate. If INEC. as the electoral umpire is complaining about the cost of conducting such an election and there are people making suggestions that parties should be empowered to fill the vacancies.

“I think the matter should be thrown to a wider consultation so that at the end of the day, the decision of the majority will carry the day. I think the challenge is not just on parties to fill in the vacancies or go for bye-elections. It is for them and INEC to do all it takes to get a winner in the first round, even if it means making the conditions more stringent.

The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Deputy Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, supported Falana’s recommendation.

He stated, “For me, I think political parties should be allowed to fill vacant positions. When this is permitted by our laws, it will save INEC from some expenses.”

Davido’s Accomplishments Make Him An Elder Despite His Age – Ibrahim Chatta

Nollywood actor Ibrahim Chatta has asserted that Nigerian singer Davido, due to his remarkable accomplishments, holds the status of an “elder” despite his young age.

According to Chatta, Davido’s wealth and influence surpass that of his billionaire father, Adedeji Adeleke.

Chatta made the assertion while instructing some young people to respect elders and those in positions of higher authority, regardless of age, as captured in a video shared on X on Wednesday.

Believing that age is merely a number, the actor pointed out that Alexander the Great passed away at a young age but accomplished extraordinary feats that many older and stronger leaders could not match.

The actor went on to explain that anyone who achieves great success, regardless of their age, is an elder.

He said, “God purposely placed some certain people in some positions, but you guys are looking at their age. It’s not about the age, any younger person that possesses things that belong to elders, is an elder.

“Alexander The Great started ruling at age 20 and died at 33. Everything he achieved, Julius Ceaser, Adolf Hiltler, and others never met up with his achievements but he died very young and completed his lifetime. And you referred to him as a child?

“You are only counting his age but he is an elder. Wizkid is also an elder. I was just looking at the numbers of people surrounding Davido the day I sat with him, I was just seeing how people were ready to be killed just to get to him. He is an elder. Davido’s father is a billionaire that has been doing big things before the singer’s arrival. His father is rich but not as Davido. If his dad is passing by you might not recognise him but if Davido passes here stampede will happen.”

Obi Remains Loyal To Abure-Led Labour Party – Legal Adviser

LP Chairman: We’ll Hold Obi To His Promises If He Becomes president
ABURE AND OBI

Labour Party’s internal crisis has sparked concerns about the party’s stability, but its legal adviser, Kehinde Edun, has reassured members that Peter Obi, the Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, remains committed to the Julius Abure-led faction.

Obi had attended a meeting convened by Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, where former Minister of Finance Nenadi Usman was appointed to lead the Party temporarily.

However, the High Court and the Court of Appeal have since ruled in favor of Abure’s continued chairmanship.

Edun, speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, emphasized that Obi maintains regular communication with the Abure-led leadership and has not indicated any intention to leave the party.

When asked on Wednesday if Obi had rejoined the Abure camp following the court judgment, Edun replied, “I believe so. He has not made any categorical statement about it, but he speaks with us all the time and he has not said he has left the party. He is with us, that is what I know and believe.”

Edun acknowledged the damage caused by the Party’s internal crisis but assured members that efforts are underway to resolve the issues.

He added: “We know that there is a crisis in the party because of the way they are making it to look, but we are making efforts to reconcile to make everybody come, and we still have time to do that.

“We have never picked a fight with anybody. We didn’t go to court against Nenadi, we went to court against INEC and the court resolved the dispute and they said they want to join. We have never sued any member of the party.”

Ondo: Amotekun Arrests 21 For Kidnapping, Theft, Other Law Violations

The Ondo State Security Network Agency, often known as the Amotekun Corps, has detained 21 suspected criminals across the state.

The suspects, who were paraded on Wednesday at the corps’ headquarters in Alagbaka, Akure, the Ondo State capital, were arrested in different parts of the state.

The Commander of the Amotekun Corps in the state, Adetunji Adeleye, stated that the arrested suspects were involved in various crimes, including kidnapping, theft, and other offenses.

Adeleye further emphasized that security issues in border communities have been addressed, and that the corps, in collaboration with other security agencies, is working to prevent the recurrence of the communal and cult-related clashes that occurred in the state recently.

He said, “Across the board, we have four kidnapped suspects, five that violated the anti-open grazing law, and 12 that breached the general law and order of the state. The implication of this, after due analysis, is that the state is relatively peaceful.

“The security breaches we have ranged from suspected kidnappers, fighting and civil disorder, wandering, anti-grazing, stealing of phones, attempted murder, stealing of aluminium products, destruction of properties, conspiracy and stealing of motorcycles, conspiracy, stealing, and aiding and abetting of motorcycles.

“One of the suspects here with a pester—not a gun, a rod—what they do is that he carries it (as you can see it on display) and hits the unsuspecting Okada rider in the head from the back and disposes of him of the Okada.

“It’s actually heavy, so with one knock, he goes off. Most times, he either passes out if there is no help or remains unconscious for several hours. We equally arrested one of them that we found handcuffed, and we’ve been trying to question and investigate which of the agencies owns the handcuff.

“We would continue to intensify our investigation to determine exactly where he escaped from. All he told us was that he escaped from custody, but he was not able to tell us which of the security agencies arrested him. He was actually trying to cut the handcuff when we arrested him.

“We equally have those that violated the anti-open grazing law. Going into the details, we have one Moses, Loki, Yakubu, and Mohammed as suspected kidnappers. Actually, two of these suspects set up the call.”

NLC Slams FG Over 50% Telecom Tariff Hike

NLC’s Joe Ajaero
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has vehemently condemned the Federal Government’s approval of a 50% increase in telecommunication tariffs, describing it as a “clear assault” on the welfare of Nigerian workers.

According to NLC President, Joe Ajaero, “This decision, coming at a time when Nigerian workers and the masses are grappling with unprecedented economic hardship, is a clear assault on their welfare and an abandonment of the people to corporate fat cats.”

Ajaero in a statement on Wednesday further stated, “Telecommunication services are essential for daily communication, work, and access to information. Yet, an average Nigerian worker already spends approximately 10 percent of their wages on telecom charges.

“For a worker earning the current minimum wage of N70,000, this means an increase from N7,000 to a staggering N10,500 per month, or 15 percent of his salary—a cost that is unsustainable.”

The NLC criticized the government for prioritizing corporate interests over the welfare of citizens. Ajaero questioned the government’s decision to approve the tariff hike within a month, while it took nearly a year to approve the recent minimum wage increase.
